A line of ants across a kitchen worktop can disappear after cleaning, only to be back the next morning. If you are asking, why do ants keep returning, the answer is usually not that the original treatment has failed. Ants are highly organised foragers. Once they find food, water or a reliable route into a building, they leave a trail for the rest of the colony to follow.

The visible ants are only part of the problem. Unless the food source, scent trail, entry point and, where necessary, the nest are addressed, activity can appear to stop and then return quickly. For homes, flats, restaurants, offices and managed properties, the right response is to identify what is attracting them and break the route properly.

Why do ants keep returning to the same place?

Ants do not return at random. Worker ants search for resources and communicate successful routes using pheromones, which are chemical scent trails. A few ants finding sugar around a bin, crumbs beneath an appliance or moisture under a sink can lead to a steady trail within hours.

Wiping away the ants you can see removes the immediate nuisance, but it rarely removes the reason they entered. It may also leave part of the scent trail behind. Other workers can continue to use that route, especially when the food source remains available.

In London properties, ants often enter through very small gaps around pipework, window frames, skirting boards, air bricks and cracks in external brickwork. They may nest outdoors in soil, beneath paving, in wall voids or around foundations, then travel indoors when conditions are favourable.

Food is often the main attraction

Ants are particularly drawn to sweet foods, but they will also feed on grease, pet food, fruit, spills and food residue in recycling containers. The smallest overlooked source can support repeat activity. A sticky patch beside a drinks machine, a full kitchen caddy or crumbs behind a cooker may be enough.

In commercial premises, the issue is not always poor cleanliness. Busy kitchens, staff break areas and hospitality settings create frequent food opportunities. Even well-run sites can develop ant activity if waste storage, cleaning routines or stock areas have a weak point.

Water and damp can keep a route active

Many ant species need access to moisture. Leaking pipes, condensation, blocked gutters, damp cupboards and poorly ventilated areas can make a building more attractive, particularly during dry weather when water is harder to find outside.

Check beneath sinks, behind washing machines, around boiler cupboards and near external drainage. Fixing a minor leak can be as important as treating the ants themselves. Where damp has affected timber or plaster, it may also create concealed routes that need further inspection.

Weather changes their behaviour

Ant activity often becomes more noticeable in spring and summer, when colonies are actively foraging. Heat and dry conditions may encourage ants to seek water indoors, while heavy rain can disturb outdoor nests and push workers towards buildings.

This does not mean every sighting is a serious infestation. One or two ants near an external door may be occasional foraging. A regular trail, ants in several rooms or repeated activity after cleaning suggests there is an established route that needs attention.

The difference between killing ants and treating a colony

A common mistake is to use a household spray directly on visible ants. This can kill workers on contact, but the nest may remain unaffected. In some cases, disturbing a trail without controlling the colony can cause workers to change route, making the problem appear to move around the property.

Professional ant treatments are designed around the species, nesting location and level of activity. Baits can be effective because foraging workers carry the product back to the nest and share it within the colony. However, bait must be placed correctly and protected from competing food sources. Spraying over or close to bait can make it less effective, depending on the product used.

There is also a timing factor. A treatment may not produce an instant visual result because workers need time to take bait back to the colony. Seeing some activity shortly after treatment is not necessarily a sign that it has failed. What matters is whether the trail reduces over the following days and whether the source of attraction has been removed.

How to stop ants returning

The most dependable approach combines hygiene, proofing and appropriate treatment. Start by following active trails carefully. They may lead to a gap below a skirting board, behind a kitchen unit, through a service duct or towards an outside wall. Avoid sealing an entry point while ants are still actively using it unless the nest and internal activity have been assessed, as this can redirect them elsewhere.

Clean food preparation areas with a detergent solution, paying attention to edges, under appliances and around bins. Empty indoor waste regularly, rinse recyclables where practical and keep dry goods in sealed containers. Do not leave pet food down overnight if ant activity is present.

Next, reduce moisture. Repair leaks, dry wet areas, improve ventilation where condensation is persistent and keep drainage clear. Outside, move bins away from doors and windows where possible, cut back vegetation touching the building and avoid leaving fallen fruit or food waste close to the property.

Proofing should focus on genuine access points. Seal cracks around pipes and cable entries with suitable materials, repair damaged seals around doors and windows, and address gaps in masonry. Properties with older services or shared pipe runs may need a more detailed survey, particularly blocks of flats and commercial buildings where ants can travel between units.

When repeat ant activity needs professional help

Call a pest control professional when trails keep returning despite thorough cleaning, when ants are appearing from walls or electrical points, or when activity affects a food business, rental property or shared building. Repeated DIY treatments can cost time and may mask the route without solving it.

Do not ignore unusual ant activity

Most indoor ant problems involve common garden ants, but not every species behaves in the same way. Large ants, ants associated with damaged or damp timber, or repeated activity from a specific structural area deserve closer investigation. The same applies if flying ants appear in significant numbers indoors. Flying ants are reproductive ants, and although a short seasonal event can be normal, a persistent indoor emergence may indicate a nest close to or within the building.

Avoid guessing the species from one photograph alone. Correct identification helps determine whether simple exclusion is enough or whether treatment and repair work are needed together.

The quickest way to get lasting control is to act on the first regular trail, rather than waiting for numbers to build. Remove the attraction, identify the entry route and arrange a professional inspection if the colony continues to find its way back. That gives your home or premises the best chance of staying clear, clean and operational.
