Bed Bugs & Fleas
Bed Bugs
Bed bugs are round flat insects of a rich reddish brown colour that cannot fly. They must either crawl or be passively transported in clothing, luggage and furniture etc.
In temperate climates bed bugs reach their peak numbers towards early autumn. They do not carry disease but their blood feeding can cause severe irritation in some people, resulting in loss of sleep, lack of energy and listlessness, particularly in children.
Bed bug bites mainly consist of a raised red bump, accompanied by intense itching. They are caused by an allergic reaction to the bug’s saliva and the bites can take several days to appear.
The bites may also generally be seen in 3s, which distinguishes them from flea bites.

Fleas
Fleas are small, wingless insects with laterally flattened bodies, typically dark brown in colour. They are excellent jumpers and can easily move between hosts or from the environment onto pets and humans. Fleas commonly infest domestic animals such as cats and dogs but will also bite humans when necessary.
Fleas are most active in warm, humid conditions, with infestations often peaking during late spring and summer. While they are not known to transmit serious diseases in the UK, their bites can cause significant discomfort, skin irritation, and allergic reactions. In severe infestations, they can also cause anaemia in pets due to blood loss.
Flea bites usually appear as small, red, itchy bumps, often found on the lower legs, ankles, or waistline. The irritation is caused by an allergic reaction to flea saliva, and the itching can be intense, sometimes leading to secondary skin infections from scratching.
One key difference from bed bug bites is that flea bites often appear in random clusters rather than in a distinct line or group of three. Flea infestations can quickly spread through the home if left untreated, as adult fleas lay eggs that drop into carpets, bedding, and furniture, where they can develop into new fleas within weeks.
