Moths

Moths

Moths are small, winged insects that can cause significant damage to clothing, carpets, and stored food products. While adult moths are harmless, their larvae feed on natural fibres such as wool, silk, and cotton, as well as dry goods like grains, flour, and cereals. In the UK, the most common problem species are the Clothes Moth, Carpet Moth, and Pantry (Indian Meal) Moth.

Clothes and carpet moths prefer dark, undisturbed areas such as wardrobes, cupboards, and under furniture, where they lay eggs directly onto fabrics. The larvae then chew through fibres, leaving irregular holes and damage. Pantry moths infest food storage areas, laying eggs in dry goods, which can lead to contamination.

Signs of a moth infestation include seeing small moths flying or crawling in affected areas, finding holes in fabrics, spotting silky webs or cases on materials, and discovering larvae in food packaging. Moth problems can spread quickly, and professional treatment is often required to fully eradicate both adults and larvae.
