Pigeons

Pigeons

Pigeons, often referred to as feral pigeons, are medium-sized birds commonly found in urban areas, parks, and around buildings. They are typically grey with iridescent feathers around the neck and can grow up to 33cm in length. Pigeons are highly adaptable and will nest and roost on ledges, roofs, and inside loft spaces, often in large flocks.

Pigeons build their nests from twigs, leaves, and debris, preferring sheltered, elevated spots that protect them from predators. Their droppings can cause significant damage to buildings due to their acidic nature, corroding stonework, metal, and paint. In addition to being unsightly, pigeon droppings pose health risks as they can contain harmful bacteria, fungi, and parasites that may cause diseases such as salmonella, psittacosis, and histoplasmosis.

Pigeons breed throughout the year, especially in areas with a constant food supply. A female pigeon can lay eggs multiple times a year, and the chicks (squabs) are cared for by both parents. Without proper control, pigeon populations can grow rapidly, leading to noise, mess, and further infestation risks from mites, fleas, and other pests they may carry.
